Start with the reason for changing form

Write down the problem the conversion should solve. It might be powder handling, limited tank capacity, operator workload or unstable make-down. If the real problem is poor sludge capture, changing form without revisiting chemistry may simply move the same problem into a different package.

Record the current dry product code, consumption, stock preparation and the accepted plant result. This baseline allows the trial to distinguish a handling improvement from a genuine change in separation performance.

Normalize the delivered polymer mass

Ask for the active content of both products on a comparable basis. Do not assume that a powder is 100% active or that an emulsion’s total solids are identical to active polymer. A supplier should identify the basis used in its documents.

As a calculation example, 5 kg of commercial product with an active mass fraction of 0.90 contains 4.5 kg active polymer. Delivering that same active mass from a product with a 0.40 active fraction requires 11.25 kg commercial product. These are hypothetical values, not Xinqi grade specifications or recommended doses. Converting kilograms of emulsion to litres also requires its density.

Check the preparation bottleneck

Powder needs reliable particle dispersion and hydration. An emulsion needs the activation sequence specified for that product. Compare usable prepared-solution output rather than the nominal size of the dosing pump. Water temperature, concentration, maturation and transfer restrictions may all limit capacity.

Do not run a liquid replacement through an unsuitable powder system simply because both eventually deliver polymer solution. Confirm equipment compatibility, cleaning and safe handling with the relevant suppliers.

Run a paired trial

Prepare each candidate correctly and compare it against the current product on the same representative feed. Record product identity, active dose, solution age, addition point and the separator result. Refine the useful dose range of each candidate instead of forcing both to one arbitrary setting.

For dewatering, follow cake solids, capture and throughput. For flotation, include float and clarified-water behavior. A difference in product form does not eliminate the need for application-specific testing.

Approve the full operating cost

Combine delivered consumption with preparation, handling, water use, storage and the process outcome. Include disposal costs when cake condition changes. Keep the approved code and preparation settings in the handover so purchasing cannot silently substitute another liquid or dry grade.

Compare the powder selection requirements with the emulsion preparation requirements, then send the conversion baseline with the sample enquiry.
